Silver Hill Foods wins Energy Award 2005

Silver Hill Foods was proud winner of Category D “Energy Awareness Campaign” at  the Sustainable Energy Awards 2005. The Awards were held on the 20th October in the Berkley Court Hotel in Dublin. The event was opened by the CEO of Sustainable Energy Ireland Mr. David Taylor. The Awards were presented to the winners by the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Mr. Noel Dempsey and Deputy  CEO of ESB Customer Supply Mr. Tony Donnelly.

Silver Hill Foods Energy Awareness Campaign is a Company-wide initiative driven by the Environmental Department and made successful by the commitment, support and participation of Company Directors and employees at all levels. The Company is pleased to report significant financial savings achieved as a direct result of our Energy Awareness Campaign which focuses on increased energy awareness rather than capital investment. Our Energy Awareness Campaign encourages all departments to take a closer look at energy usage, to improve housekeeping routines and to take responsibility for energy usage in their own areas.

Silver Hill Foods ultimate aim in Energy Management is to continually move towards cleaner production reducing the amount of energy required by our processes, reducing the amount of energy wasted on our site, re-using energy where possible and developing renewable sources of energy as with, for example, our duck slurry recycling project.

In the Sustainable Energy Awards 2004 Silver Hill Foods was overall winner of Category C for our Thermal Energy Project. The aim of this project was to convert approximately 80,000 tonnes of wet duck slurry from our farm area into heat, power and a marketable fertiliser product.

New Product showcased at Glee 2005

Silver Hill had a very successful trip to Birmingham in September 2005 to showcase Silver Hill Organic Duck Manure Pellets for the first time. Glee is a garden and leisure exhibition and trade show attended each year by thousands of garden industry professionals from around the world. The 2005 event took place on 18-20 September in the NEC, Birmingham, England. Having attended Glee 2004 as visitors introducing the concept of our new product, Silver Hill was delighted to attend Glee 2005 as exhibitors showcasing Silver Hill Organic Duck Manure Pellets for the first time.

Silver Hill, newcomers to the horticultural market, met with a very interesting and varied range of potential customers for our new product at the show. Visitors to our stand included representatives from Garden Centres, Fertiliser Manufacturers and Suppliers, Hardware and DIY Stores, Nurseries, Research Centres, Radio Stations, Journals and Magazines and individual gardening enthusiasts from around the world. We also had considerable interest from some of the larger market players regarding formation of future partnerships.

During our three days at Glee, we received a lot of valuable feedback in terms of expert advice from gardening professionals relating to the further development of our new product and our efforts to contribute to sustainable development were welcomed by retailers and end-users alike. We were also pleased at the very positive response to our packaging display.

The show was a resounding success for Silver Hill and we are now focusing on developing our product to meet the requirements of customers identified at the show.
Silver Hill is very excited about this new venture and keen to supply the market in the coming months.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank any readers who called to our stand at Glee 2005 and particularly those of you who expressed interest in our product or offered feedback and advice. We hope your time at Glee 2005 was as enjoyable and successful as ours and we will endeavour to keep you all up to date with product development during the coming weeks.

The Irish Food Writers Guild Annual Food Awards took place in L’Ecrivain restaurant, Dublin where the Awards were presented by Nuala Cullen, Chairwoman, Irish Food Writers Guild and Micheál O’Muircheartaigh, Chairman, Guaranteed Irish.

The Awards, which were sponsored this year by Guaranteed Irish, are now in their twelfth year and have gained a reputation as one of the most anticipated dates in the calendar for anyone with an interest in Ireland’s food industry. These Awards are quite unique in that candidates cannot enter or apply. Silver Hill Foods receives Thermal Energy Award 2004

On 11th November 2004 Sustainable Energy Ireland, in conjunction with ESB Customer Supply, hosted their first ever Sustainable Energy Awards gala ceremony in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin.
Our Company was delighted to attend the ceremony and to be named Overall Winner in the Thermal Energy Project Category.

Mr. Stuart Steele, Managing Director, Silver Hill Foods, receiving the Award

The Sustainable Energy Awards aim to recognise individuals and companies who demonstrate excellence in the management and use of energy and who are committed to more sustainable energy practices in business. Awards are available in 7 different categories and are open to companies of all size in industrial, commercial and public sectors nationwide. Over 250 comapanies and organisations competed for the 2004 Sustainable Energy Awards and Silver Hill Foods is proud to be among the final winners.

The energy related savings and benefits of our award winning project include its demonstration of the potential for CHP development in Ireland, as advocated by the National Climate Change Strategy, and its transferability across many industrial and agricultural disciplines will encourage a wider local and global uptake in generation and use of renewable energy.

We are using novel technologies and processes to harness a previously unexploited renewable energy source and to alleviate an over-reliance on traditional fossil fuels and conventional electricity which are both financially and environmentally costly.

Instead, we will be producing a carbon-neutral source of power and heat - essential for Ireland’s successful transition to a lower carbon economy. The use of this renewable energy source will provide us with security of energy supply to our new project and will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, thus reducing our contribution to national and global climate change.

Our achievements will help Ireland achieve national and international targets in renewable energy development under the EU Renewables Directive and Kyoto Protocol. The amount of green electricity generated by this project will be 20% of the site’s total electricity consumption which is in line with the EU target of 22% by 2010.
For local communities this project demonstrates potential for bioenergy opportunities primarily in agriculture but also for other industrial applications and elements of the processes and technologies used are ideal for use in energy services co-operatives similar to those already in existence in other parts of Europe.
